ast president Invocation: Bob Schroeder,

“Help me, Lord, to descend into the depths of my being below my conscious and sub-conscious life

until I discover my real self,

that which you have given to me,

the divine likeness in which I am made

and into which I am to grow,

the place where your spirit communes with mine,

the spring from which all my life rises.

Blair Blum

Invocation:The Pledge of Allegiance: Ken Hamilton

Song Leader: Bob Teaff,

In my entire lifetime, only Rotary has ever asked me to sing.

Song: Happy Birthday (Marc Lanci).”Happy Birthday to You (Marc Lanci).

  Allen Aiello,

One of my favorite proverbs: ‘Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of light to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed.’ Amen”

The Pledge of Allegiance: Jerry Allen

Song Leader: Chuck Dick,

Thank you very much, has-been Blair.  When J.J. called me to lead the song today, I was reminded two weeks ago Bill Burch did us a great favor, but he didn’t have time, really, to explain the significance of singing the song ‘Welcome Rotarians.’  I had said that I was going to lead ‘Welcome Rotarians,’ but that songbook isn’t on our tables, and since I discovered two weeks ago that most of the members of this club don’t know ‘Welcome Rotarians’ we are going to search for another song, but I can’t resist the temptation to tell you this: It was about twenty years ago that one of our more illustrious club members here, a guy who in retirement became even more prolific and creative than he had been when he was in the retail world, Homer Torrey, spent his whiling hours writing songs, and one of those songs he wanted to become the theme song of San Diego--it went ‘San Diego, San Diego,’  something like that. When I led a GSE team, I made my team learn that song, and everywhere we went in Belgium we sang Homer Torrey’s song.  And we started singing that song here at the club, and it’s fallen a bit into disuse. So for those of you who are newer members of the club I hope that we will have that songbook  back in due course and we can sing it again and you can remember a guy who left a bit of his legacy to us in the form of that song.  Now since we’re not going to sing that, we’re going to do something imaginative, it goes like this…”

 Song: “God Bless America.”

Vida mins:Marc TimeBlair Fare:

Now that was Italian! Last Tuesday past president Blair Blum and her familia of volunteers successfully continued the club’s decade-old tradition of staging an annual Rotary year ending affair to remember: the much anticipated RCLJ presidential demotion. This year’s team of thematic imagineers focused on President Marc Lanci’s Italian heritage by celebrating that nation’s much loved food and drink by providing two serve yourself buffets laden with varieties of pasta, cheese and meat platters positioned alongside large bowls of tossed salads and garlic bread baskets over-shadowed by large jugs of easily accessed Chianti, all presented by resident catering maven and professional party planner Pam Gerhart. Long rows of tables filled the St. James Fellowship Hall were set facing a stage with Blair Blum and Marc Lanci seated below on one side and Godfathers Roger Anderson and Ron Spelman slouched in high backed leather chairs above on the apron on the other, with a large suspended screen filled with slide show paced images starring Marc from infancy through marriage and family set between, all narrated by Roger and Ron as read from a clever and funny script written by former television news anchor--and the evening’s program producer-- Susan Farrell. The humorous narrative was accented by piano accompaniment by John Hawkins and Jeanne Hawkins. Audio and visual design and production direction by special event planning expert Pierre Charmasson brought the theme to life.     Special thanks also go to greeter Kevin Choquette; Head bartender Art Johnson, ably assisted by Darrell Fanestil, David Shaw and Davis Cracroft; Videographer Shayne Gilder, and the rest of the team who helped before or during: Patty Coleman; Barbara Jarzyna; Susan Fox; Amanda McLaren;  Taylor Miller and David CuppWe regret to announce the passing of long time club member Ray Fowler (1978). Ray was an active member serving as club secretary in 1982-84 and treasurer 1985-86. His beloved wife, Mary Grace, was a frequent luncheon visitor. We will miss Ray’s quiet and kind presenceCongratulations to David Cupp for being one of ten UCSD employees recognized as “outstanding” for his work on campus and for his known dedication to Rotary, “I’m sure that helped in their decision.”We extend happy birthday wishes to these Rotarians born in the month of July: Peter Toma, Denny Denman, Nilou Cowperthwaite, Bill Kneib, Bill Burch, Ron Jones, Jerry Allen, Zeke Knight, Maureen Schwartz and Joe Darby The annual La Jolla Concerts by the Sea series at the cove is in its summertime full swing, and once again RCLJ hot dog concession stand volunteers are demonstrating to the community not only their dedication to service, but their strong sales abilities, as well. Concerts president Shirley Mae Davis, a longtime Kiwanian, was overheard to say in a tone of awed wonder, “The Rotarians are really good. We thank the June 26 crew for their remarkable Sunday in the park service: Hannah Orr-Ziv, Val Frager, Sam Wurtzbacher, Sid Stutz, Davis Cracroft, Edith Duart, Amanda McLaren, Mera Kelley, Claudia Laird in the company of her new husband, and Tony Buonsante (“A hot dog? How many do you want?”). The fellowship opportunity continued again last Sunday with Geoff and Maureen Schwartz, Susan Fox, Bonnie Adams, Tony Buonsante, Ron Spelman, Cathy Jones, Ed Danenhauer, Mera Kelley, Margie and Bob Herrick slinging the red hotsSeveral weeks ago we wrote of Dick Woltman’s prestigious nomination as a Father of the Year, along with a number of other San Diego luminaries, in a fund raiser sponsored by the American Diabetes Foundation.
