ast president Invocation: Ray
Vellinga,
“We’re in
a wonderful country here.
Protect us from many of the disasters that are befalling the other peoples of the world. We’re blessed that not everything
affects us, and at least at this point in history we have peace on our
continent and in our country, and we have the Lord to be thankful for that. Not a day passes that we don’t
thank our Lord for prosperity
and security. We hope that this spreads; we have good will, we’re attempting to do
good things in Iraq. We’re misunderstood in a lot of places. Hopefully we’ll be able to lead the rest of that country so they
can
all enjoy the types of benefits that we have here. So, for these things we thank
you, Lord, amen.”
Blair Blum
Invocation:The Pledge of Allegiance: Carol Foreman
Song Leader: Bill Meanley
Bob Teaff,
“
Song: “America the Beautiful”
Happy Birthday to You (Marc
Lanci).”
Allen Aiello,
“One of my favorite proverbs:
‘Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is
more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more
precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in
her right hand; in her left are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of light to those who embrace her;
those who lay hold of her will be blessed.’ Amen”
The Pledge of
Allegiance: Jerry Allen
Song Leader: Chuck Dick,
“Thank you
very much, has-been Blair. When J.J. called
me to lead the song today, I was reminded two weeks ago Bill Burch did us a
great favor, but he didn’t have time, really, to explain the significance of
singing the song ‘Welcome Rotarians.’ I
had said that I was going to lead ‘Welcome Rotarians,’ but that songbook isn’t
on our tables, and since I discovered two weeks ago that most of the members of
this club don’t know ‘Welcome Rotarians’ we are going to search for another
song, but I can’t resist the temptation to tell you this: It was about twenty
years ago that one of our more illustrious club members here, a guy who in
retirement became even more prolific and creative than he had been when he was
in the retail world, Homer Torrey, spent his whiling hours writing songs, and
one of those songs he wanted to become the theme song of San Diego--it went
‘San Diego, San Diego,’ something like
that. When I led a GSE team, I made my team learn that song, and everywhere we
went in Belgium we sang Homer Torrey’s song.
And we started singing that song here at the club, and it’s fallen a bit
into disuse. So for those of you who are newer members of the club I hope that
we will have that songbook back in due
course and we can sing it again and you can remember a guy who left a bit of
his legacy to us in the form of that song.
Now since we’re not going to sing that, we’re going to do something
imaginative, it goes like this…”
Song: “God Bless America.”

29, ‘06 “Rotary At Work”
day. Bill will be forming a committee for the district wide
special event…Several weeks ago we reported Bob
Rubel’s intention to
exhibit his watercolors in the lobby of his Wesley Palms residence and then
donate all of the proceeds,
if any, from hoped for art sales
to the club’s Garfield High School STRIVE scholarship program.
Last week Bob presented a check for $610.50 to President
Lee and this explanation, “I
was told by most residents that they didn’t have the wall space to show my
paintings, so I had them reduced
to greeting cards and they sold well.”…The
Beat Goes On Dept: The positive buzz regarding the Senior Citizens committee’s successful
League House-sited “Tropical Paradise” picnic two weeks ago is
well deserved. The detailed
planning orchestrated by chair Penny Shurtleff
and executed by her crack team of volunteers,
gave the League House tenants a free ride to the South
Pacific without leaving home. The central patio common area was Laurnie
Durisoe-designed and decorated with
strategically placed fish netting, palm thatch skirting and Hawaiian language signs hung everywhere.
Everyone wore Hawaiian print clothing
and every neck was draped with a lei.
Behind the bar were Blair Blum,
Jim Sexton and Gordon
Shurtleff, and lending their talents where needed were
committee members President Lee Vida,
Hanna Orr-Ziv,
Susan Fox, emcee Ron
Jones, Geoff
and Maureen Schwartz,
Barbara Jarzyna, pianist
John Hawkins, Mera
Kelley, Jeanne Hawkins, raffle
queen Jeanne Cherbeneau,
Ed Lewis, and
Jenna Cassell.
We thank all the good folks who generously donated gifts
for the raffle: Bill Meanley,

Warwick, Wayne
Woods, Sam

and Greg Harris. Special
thanks go to League House director Nancy Wozniak for her hands-on participation,
and to Laurnie
Durisoe for sponsoring the surprise professional
hula demonstration,
and Zeke Knight for
the floral arrangements flown in from the islands.
Aloha.
Senior Citizens committee mem-bers Susan Fox and Jeanne
Cherbeneau report that they have some “neat stuff” but need more contri-butions for raffling at our July 24th League House tropics-themed picnic.
New club inductee Dr. John Montoya has donated a
teeth whitening package
that should sell a few tickets. Connect
