ROTARY CLUB OF LA JOLLA

Service Above Self”

Focusing on Truth, Fairness, Better Friendships

and Shades of Beneficence for All

September 6, 2005

Writer: Ron J. Jones

Presiding (8/30): President Lee Vida

Invocation: Michelle Serafini,

Desire creates power,

and everyone here has the power--

the power to dream.

All we need to dream is the desire,

that is the beauty of the human mind.

To dream gives us hope and possibilities,

hope and possibilities become reality

through the strength of human will.

In the strength of human will there is power:

the power to see opportunities to do good—

desire and dreams,

may we have the courage to use them well.”

The Pledge of Allegiance: Dave Goldberg

Song Leader: Don Dewhurst

Song: “God Bless America.”

Vida mins:
Happy birthday greetings to these Rotarians born in the month of September: Kevin Hughes, Orrin Gabsch, Harry Phillips, Charlie Robins, Lisa Reynolds, Bob Rubel, Bob Teaff, Earl Edwards, Ted Rutter, Shayne Gilder, Pam Whitcomb, Bishop Bob Wolterstorff and Tony Buonsante

Just a reminder: All board meetings will now begin at 4:30 p.m., rather than 5:30, at Sante Ristorante…

Community Services committee chair Camille McKinnie and her crew (Penny Shurtleff, Davis Cracroft, Don Dewhurst, Bob Schroeder, Sam Wurtzbacher, Michael Morton, Lisa Reynolds, Ted Rutter and Ron Jones) are looking to the future and involvement in a worthy project that would credit our club as being responsible for its existence. A number of suggestions from club members have already been offered to the committee for consideration, and a list is being compiled. Stay tuned…

Over 300 people, including several RCLJ members, attended the successful La Mesa Sunrise Rotary-sponsored “1000 Smiles” fund raiser at Viejas casino two weeks ago…

President Vida believes that it’s important that Club 24 members attend the September 10 District Foundation Seminar. “We’ll pay for the registration which includes breakfast and a fantastic program.”…

Youth Services board director Susan Fox reminds club members that the deadline for applying to be a host family for 4 months for the 2006-2007 school year or for participating in the one-year exchange program is November 18, 2005. The deadline for participating as a host or student in the 4 to 6 week summer 2006 program is December 16, 2005. Both programs are for students who will be between the ages of 15 and 18 while they are participating. Contact Susan if you are interested. Susan adds, “Let there be peace in the world. If you are planning for a year, plant rice. If you are planning for a decade, plant a tree. If you are planning for a lifetime, educate a person. If you are planning for the future generation, participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.”…

The Rotary Club of Sasebo, Japan, will be celebrating its 55th anniversary on Oct. 28, and you’re invited to attend the party. SRC President Yoshimichi Yamagata writes, “Nineteen years have passed since the Rotary Club of La Jolla and the Rotary Club of Sasebo became sister clubs. We are planning an evening ceremony at the hotel and we will send more details at a later date.” At last week’s meeting President Lee Vida asked Kaye Woltman, who has been there twice already, if she and Dick were thinking of going again? While Kaye was considering the question, Dick Woltman, recalling the Japanese sake-driven hospitality, muttered, “My liver can’t handle it.” Ron Spelman, always ready to sacrifice himself in the name of international good will, raised his hand and said, “I’ll go.”
