ROTARY CLUB OF LA JOLLA

Service Above Self”

Focusing on Truth, Fairness, Better Friendships and Shades of Beneficence for All

September 27, 2005

Writer: Ron J. Jones

Presiding (9/20): President Lee Vida

Invocation: Aaron Mulvaney,

Spirit of Life, be with us this hour.

Join us today as we gather in a wider search

for truth and purpose.

In this quest, may we greet one another

with open hearts and minds;

may we inspire each other to consider new questions and seek deeper meaning;

and may we cultivate wisdom and compassion.

Let all who enter this sanctuary see a welcome face, hear a kind word, and find comfort in this community.

And may all that is done and said here today

be in service to love and justice. Amen.”

The Pledge of Allegiance: Dick Woltman,

Join me in pledging before some judge says

we can’t do that anymore.”

Song Leader: Dave Weston,

“…it would be wonderful if we all started out on the same note.”

Song: “Star Spangled Banner.”

Visiting Rotarians (9/20):

We welcomed Neil Hokanson, Encinitas/La Costa, CA, Investment management; Peter Platt, San Diego #33, International Attorney and Mike Daniels, San Diego #33, Real Estate.

Guests of Rotarians (9/20):

Ron Jones introduced Dual Protective Strategy Management representative and third time club visitor Ellyn Quiggle, along with I.C.R. Financial Center stockbroker Diane Gold, visiting the club for the second time.

Mike Frager presented Spanish translator Yolanda Walther-Meade, “She worked for President Bush and President Fox of Mexico, and she’s going to help in our November 11, first annual bi-national golf tournament.” Mike also hosted UCSD senior and Seahorse Capital intern Mike Rush.

Vida mins:

Several weeks ago the club board voted to set up a $5000 total matching fund opportunity for any member contributions intended for Rotary’s hurricane disaster recovery program. Working through our own district office all dollars collected would be funneled to Rotary District 6200 (Mississippi) for distribution. Club treasurer Ted Rutter reports, “I am proud to say that in under an hour and a half, our club was able to raise member pledges of over $3500 for our Rotary Katrina Relief efforts, in large part thanks to the generosity of Jeanne and John Hawkins and Bud and Pat Lynch.” At last week’s meeting several other members stepped forward to complement that amount, bringing the amount to the hoped for matching fund-driven $10,000.

In a quick vote the board also decided to contribute to the education fund of Bonnie Adams’ 17-month old grandson, Nathan Kirn, son of the late Brad Kirn…

Think thoughts of good health for Weston Hook and for the mother of Don Dewhurst and Patty Coleman. Last week Patty spent four supportive days with her hospital-bound mom, “She’s home now and resting comfortably.”…

The recent President’s Fireside Chat held at the home of President Lee Vida was attended by five red badge-wearing Club 24 members (that’s our club within a club), with five past presidents (Dave Weston, Bob Herrick, Ed Danenhauer, Dick Woltman and Bob Teaff) on hand to discuss the story of Rotary and to answer any questions. And you thought one-on-one was only a basketball term…

Youth Service committee chair Susan Fox announces that the LJHS Interact club has a record ninety members enrolled, with 60 students actually attending the first meeting. Susan thanks her committee members (Dee Dee Duarte, Geoff and Maureen Schwartz, and Amanda McLaren) for their dedicated support…

Penny Shurtleff’s Senior Citizen’s committee met last week to settle the League House activities calendar for the rest of this year. Efforts are being made to include the residents in the Halloween celebration at the Recreation Center, seminars focusing on health and living wills featuring pharmacist Wayne Woods and attorney Dave Weston, with December seeing the return of piano man John and Jeanne Hawkins for a yuletide sing-a-long. Um, by the way, there’re only 88 more shopping days ‘til Christmas.

I grew up in Iowa City, Iowa, I’ve only lived here a couple of years. I went to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. I’m a mom with two kids. My son, who is 22, is a senior at Emory in Daytona Beach, studying to become a pilot. My daughter is at Drake in Des Moines. I have a stepson aged 23. He graduated two years ago and is now working at Grumman. I’m married to Franco, an attorney, and I’m a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker.
